Preventing Eye Injuries In The Workplace

Posted by James Cummings | Apr 16, 2019 | 0 Comments

Many Connecticut residents spend a good portion of their time at work. Unfortunately, each year, around 700,000 Americans experience an eye injury that impairs their vision in the workplace. Since so much time is spent in the workplace, it is imperative that emphasis is put on eye safety.

Almost all occupations can expose workers to eye injury risks. This is true whether a person works in an office or if they have a physically demanding outdoor job. Work-related eye injuries occur because of chemical burns, punctures or cuts to the eye, or damage that results from exposure to bright ultraviolet lights. This means that eye injury risks are especially high in jobs that involve handling chemicals or that use tools for welding.

Blue light from digital screens poses risks to individuals who work in offices. It is estimated that around 60% of people spend at least six hours looking at electronic devices that have LED backlight technology each day. This blue light may have some benefits, but prolonged exposure can cause eye strain syndrome and retinal damage.

When proper strategies are implemented in the workplace, eye injuries can be prevented. Both employers and employees need to do their part. Employers should provide their employees with appropriate eye protection, eliminate potential hazards and raise awareness about workplace safety. Employees can reduce their risk for eye injuries related to LED backlight technology by using an anti-glare screen, adjusting the screen angle and taking breaks every 20 minutes. Scheduling regular eye exams is also helpful.

If an individual sustains an injury on the job, they may be due compensation. An attorney who specializes in workers' compensation cases may be able to help an individual fill out the proper forms and answer questions regarding the case. The attorney might advise their client that accepting a settlement would waive their right to file a civil lawsuit.
