Tips For Safely Traveling in Winter Weather

Like it or not, winter has arrived. This means having to drive in winter conditions. Roads in Connecticut can quickly become overwhelmed with icy conditions and driving snow. These conditions frequently lead to accidents, but there are plenty of safety precautions drivers can take to avoid a collision in winter weather.

One of the best tips for avoiding a vehicle accident during the winter is avoiding it altogether. Weather forecasting isn't perfect, but planning your trips around weather projections can help you avoid some of the iciest conditions. Drivers should wait out storms when possible, but at worst make an effort to select routes that are less likely to become unmanageable during winter weather.

Drivers should also prepare their car for winter weather. There are a variety of systems in a car that can be affected by cold weather, and having them all checked before a winter trip can help drivers avoid a headache. Some of the systems affected by cold weather include the ignition, brakes, spark plugs, tires, and wiring.

Being prepare for an accident can keep a bad situation from becoming worse. Drivers should always travel with a full tank of gas and fresh antifreeze. Additionally, it is highly recommended for drivers to carry additional items such as a spare tire, jumper cables, a tow chain, a first aid kit, non-perishable food, and blankets. Being stranded in the cold after an accident is a serious situation that should always be avoided if possible.

Unfortunately, even the most prepared drivers will get into vehicle accidents during icy weather. For one thing, there is no way to account for other drivers. If an individual is injured in a vehicle accident caused by another driver, they may have a claim for compensation. An experienced personal injury attorney may be able to help that driver recover the compensation they deserve by filing a lawsuit in the court system.
