Internet of Things tech improves workplace safety

Workplace fatalities and injuries are a huge problem in Connecticut and around the world. In fact, the International Labor Organization reports that 151 workers suffer some sort of on-the-job injury every 15 seconds worldwide. Meanwhile, 321,000 people lose their lives in work-related accidents each year.

To address this issue, businesses are turning to the Internet of Things, or IoT, technology to help them protect workers. IoT technology uses connected devices to monitor the health and safety of workers. It is also used to track the safety of work environments and equipment.

For example, WearSafe offers a wearable tag that allows workers to discreetly call for help if they are in danger or suffer a health issue. This type of device can be especially helpful for lone workers, who account for around 15 percent of the workforce. Smart helmets are also becoming popular in the construction industry. These helmets can measure a worker's heart rate, skin temperature and brain activity and send it to a central location for monitoring. If a worker shows signs of fatigue or illness, he or she can be quickly attended to. On worksites, companies use IoT devices to monitor the environment and equipment for safety issues in real-time. This allows employers to address problems before they become a health threat.

Thousands of Connecticut workers face serious on-the-job hazards each day. Victims of work-related accidents have the right to pursue workers' compensation benefits, which cover medical expenses and provide wage replacement payments. Injured workers may find it helpful to consult with an attorney before filing their claim. An attorney could review the claim and push for the maximum settlement possible. Legal counsel could also file an appeal if a claim is denied.
