Factors That Can Contribute To A Fatal Accident

Posted by James Cummings | Mar 27, 2018 | 0 Comments

There is a wide range of causes for fatal traffic accidents. Everything from distractions to driver error has led to tragedy on Connecticut roads over the years.

Unsafe driving practices are some of the leading causes of fatal traffic accidents. These practices include drunk or impaired driving, which is especially dangerous behavior given that the act reduces a driver's ability to react to changes in driving conditions. Another form of unsafe driving is engaging in distractions, which can be anything from text messages and phone calls to talking with passengers.

Not all traffic accidents stem from the actions of drivers. A large number of traffic accidents is caused by faulty road design. Some segments of the road have hazards that the general public will struggle to safely operate a motor vehicle on. These design errors can include dangerous intersections, tight corners and missing shoulders.

Weather also makes a big impact. Precipitation like rain and snow can lower both visibility and traction on the road. Careful, defensive driving can limit wrecks caused by weather conditions but can't prevent them entirely.

In many traffic accidents, an injured driver is eventually able to pursue a claim for damages. Fatal traffic accidents are not as straightforward, but a driver's damages don't go away when they die: A victim's family may still pursue those damages against a responsible party. In the case of a fatal car accident, surviving family members may contact legal counsel. An attorney with experience in personal injury law may be able to assist surviving family members in negotiating a settlement with the responsible party or their insurance carrier. In cases where settlement isn't possible, an attorney might file a lawsuit on behalf of the surviving family to pursue damages.
